Understanding IT Innovations Through Computational Analysis of Discourse

RESEARCH QUESTION How can the relationships among information technology innovations be described and analyzed in a representative, dynamic, and scalable way? THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK Innovation concepts are interrelated in an idea network, where using an ecological perspective they can be likened to species in a competitive and symbiotic resource space. METHODS We apply discourse analysis to innovation research and apply a computational approach to scale up the analysis. Data: Full-text articles published in InformationWeek, Computerworld, BusinessWeek, The Economist, Newsweek, and US News & World Report (1998-2007) via Lexis/Nexis. Analysis: Apply Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence to compare language used to describe IT innovations in paragraphs.
